The Viogenex group holds its first meeting of the year

  • The meeting took place in the morning on Thursday 26th at the Branch Offices in La Cala de Mijas

The British Consulate also participated in this encounter, aimed at combating gender-based violence among foreign women

The Viogenex group, which helps foreign women victims of gender violence in Mijas, celebrates its first meeting in 2023. This initiative was born in 2016 in response to the needs and lack of information provided to foreign women living in Mijas, as well as to coordinate this help and prevent new cases of gender violence in the municipality. The councillor for Foreigners, Arancha López (Cs), explained that this is the first meeting of the year, in which “we take stock of all that happened in 2022 and carry out an analysis of the current situation, as well as the lines of work that will be followed throughout the current year”. Mijas is a multicultural municipality where different nationalities converge. That is why this working group is necessary to compensate  the lack of information available to foreign resident women and to prevent new cases of gender violence in the town. “30% of the women victims of gender violence in Mijas are foreigners”, said the councillor for Equality and Diversity, Natalia Martínez (PSOE), “that is why it is essential that these working groups are operational in order to carry out actions and campaigns and to raise awareness and inform foreign women specifically”, she added. Representation from the British Consulate In addition to representatives of the Guardia Civil, Local Police, Soroptimist, the Lions Club and other groups in Mijas, the meeting was attended by the head of the prevention working group from the British consulate in Malaga, Alberto Pérez, who explained that they want to “see how we can collaborate with this group from the consulate, how we can help the victims and go a step further”, adding that this meeting “is a first contact”. “At the consulate we have some guidelines to provide help to British victims of gender violence, but  we want to know  more and  be able to inform them about all the subsidies available, including those provided by the British government, to non-governmental groups working in this field so that they can help the victims”, he added. The councillors form the Mijas Town Hall assured that the local government will continue to work with this unique group, not only on the Costa del Sol, but in the province of Malaga and it is a pioneer in Andalusia, which works with the sole objective of eradicating gender based violence in the municipality.
