Last Wednesday, 11th of January, a new working meeting of the group “ Help for Elderly Foreigners” (Apemex), which started operating last year, was held in the Branch Offices of La Cala de Mijas. It involves the Mijas Town Hall and the associations of foreigners in the municipality.
After several cases involving elderly people with needs for special care and assistance, the councillor for Foreigners proposed the creation of a group to attend to cases of assistance to foreigners, mainly elderly people, who do not have a support network in Spain. According to the councillor for this department, Arancha López (Cs), “Mijas is a municipality where many foreigners live and a significant number of them are retired or elderly people who at certain times may need help to make arrangements or get their lives back on track. Some of them have problems when it comes to managing their affairs and need these services to be able to guarantee that they have good quality of life. This group is very close-knit and our priority is to make foreigners feel at ease.
The group is also integrated by the Department for Social Services of the Mijas Town Hall, which works together with the foreign populations to detect cases that need specific attention or the management of their current situation.
The Apemex group speaks several languages in order to be able to attend to the needs of any resident. It meets periodically to monitor current cases and to detect new ones. For his part, the councillor for Social Services at the Mijas Town Hall, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), assured that “there are cases of foreigners, mostly British citizens, who came here to enjoy their retirement and were initially independent, but with the passing of time, they are no longer autonomous and are having problems when dealing with situations that they have to face in their daily lives. Thanks to the collaboration of the associations, we can help the foreign Senior Citizens and provide a solution to their problems”.
