The meeting addressed issues related to Brexit and its impact on the British community living in the municipality

The visit by the new British Consul in Spain, Lucy Gorman, to the Mijas Town Hall is part of a round of institutional visits that the diplomat is making. Gorman was accompanied by the Vice Consul of the British Consulate in Malaga, Miriam Pérez.

During the meeting with the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the councillor for Foreigners in the Mijas Town Hall, Arancha López (Cs), issues related to Brexit and its impact on the British community living in the municipality were discussed, as well as other issues related to the field of collaboration between Britain and Spain, and the Consular Network and Mijas.

“Today we have taken advantage of this first contact to continue maintaining such close relations as we had previously with the former consul and at the same time establish channels of communication directly with the consulate to put in place mechanisms and facilities to help British residents”, said the mayor of Mijas.

The visit is of great interest to the Consular Network due to the high number of British residents in the municipality, which the consul described as positive for the living standards of the community.

“Mijas is a very important municipality, there is a very large British population here, almost 9000 British citizens and for me it was very important to come and meet the mayor and the government team and explain my role, as well as the structure we have here in Spain from the embassy”, said the Consul for the Spanish Consular Network of Great Britain, Lucy Gorman.

  • The visit was of great interest for Mijas due to the many British residents.

The Consul also thanked the Mijas Town Hall for the gesture of sending the Consulate the book of condolences following the passing  of Queen Elizabeth II.

Included as part of the programme for the visit, the Department for Foreigners in the Mijas Town Hall took stock of the many links with the British community in the municipality.

This was emphasised by the councillor for Foreigners in Mijas, Arancha Lopez (Cs),  who stated: “we will continue to work along the same lines that we have been reinforcing today with the British Consulate to ensure that the citizens from Great Britain who live in our municipality and who choose us as a place of residence receive all the help and support they require from the Department for Foreigners”.

The rain was no obstacle for the British Consul for the Consular Network of Spain, Lucy Gorman, who assured that she was delighted with the landscape and views in Mijas on her first visit to the municipality. “I think it is a very pretty village, even though it is raining today. I will, however, have to come back another day to see it in the sunshine. I have just told the mayor that I think it is very pretty, I really like the white village houses”, stated the Consul.
