Mijas is committed to renewing the rubbish bins throughout the municipality and is doing so while choosing models that are showing very good results in those Spanish municipalities where they have already been implemented, as pointed out by FCC, the company that has held the concession for the Mijas Solid Urban Waste collection (RSU) and Street Cleaning service since last June. “With this renovation, we are going to gain a lot in terms of cleanliness and aesthetics in the municipality”, assured the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE).
The head of contracting for the FCC Medio Ambiente service, Carmen Téllez, pointed out that “these models of bins are showing very good results, and they are also vandal-proof”.
There are currently around 600 rubbish bins in Mijas, and thanks to this renovation almost one thousand will be installed, as the councillor for Street Cleaning at the Mijas Town Hall, Laura Moreno (PSOE), pointed out. “We are going to start installing these bins this coming week and they will replace all the ones we have”, she said, adding that “we will also soon be installing the 2,000 new containers we have purchased, which will be another move to improve the image of the municipality”.

Rubbish bins for dog faeces
As a novelty with this new initiative, the local government team in Mijas will install specific rubbish bins for the collection of pet excrement, model Sanecan. These bins have a cone-shaped basket and a hemispherical lid with a mechanism for removing bags and a standard key lock. Inside, there is another smaller basket that is designed to collect the dog’s waste. It also has a foot pedal to open the lid and avoid touching the bin.
“These bins are equipped with bags to collect the excrement of the animals and by simply pressing a pedal with your foot you can deposit the bag inside”, explained mayor González, who added that these bins “are going to be located in those areas in town where there are visibly more dogs being taken out than anywhere else.
This initiative also reinforces the public awareness campaign promoted by the Mijas Town Hall, ‘Cuida Mijas’ (Care for Mijas). The government team is calling for the correct use of these new rubbish bins and “for citizens not to deposit bags of household rubbish in them, as has happened in some areas previously”.
