The Virgen de la Peña Square is dressed up to pay tribute to those who choose the town to spend their holidays in a pioneering festival in Malaga

Mijas celebrated this Wednesday, 28th September, its traditional, multicultural and pioneering Tourist Day. Every year, this is a day when the town pays tribute to the people who visit it. The Mayor of the town, Josele González and the First Deputy and Councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín, attended the event accompanied by other government team members."

"Mijas thanks the thousands of tourists who have passed our municipality throughout history. During these years of the pandemic, we have missed them a lot because they are a fundamental part of the vitality of our municipality. For this reason, we dedicate at least one day to them on this traditional Tourist Day every year. We offer shows with our most deeply rooted traditions and the best gastronomy selection. We also have a paella tasting for all the visitors who have gathered in this Virgen de la Peña Square", says the Mayor.

On the other hand, Gonzalez has highlighted that "Mijas has become a reference destination among tourists for its quality of services. Local commerce, the hotel and catering trade, public services and even the human quality of our neighbours. We all form part of the same network so that the person who arrives in our town takes away with them the best possible taste in their mouth".

"This is a way of thanking the tourists who have chosen Mijas to spend their holidays or a few days and enjoy all the good things we have to offer our visitors. A whitewashed village, beaches, golf, gastronomy, history, or culture are some of our strong points," he said.  Martin added, "we are grateful that visitors have responded and have felt confident in our offer which means that this summer 2022 Mijas beat its record for hotel occupancy. In July, occupancy reached 89.95 per cent, while in August, it was 90.89 per cent, which, with an average of 90.4 per cent, leaves us with the highest occupancy figure in the village history".

The Councillor remarked during the Tourist Day celebration in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo, "tourism is not only a strong economic engine but a social and multicultural boost that enriches life in Mijas" and even more so as "many people have chosen our city trusting us, and have decided to spend a few days in a safe destination.

This year's Tourist Day has had flamenco performances that have livened the day with different passes and tasting typical Malaga products besides a great paella. The award was presented to the 'Ruta de la Tapa de Mijas' winning establishment this year ". It has again been a great success in terms of participation, surpassing previous editions as in each event our local restaurants improve gastronomic offer", Martín recalled", Martín recalled.

Finally, the Mayor wanted to "thank our visitors for choosing to visit us." He stressed, "we will continue working to grow and improve our offer so that tourists who decide to come to Mijas find something always new, better, and something that deserves them to return to this land that will always welcome them with open arms and a smile on their face".
