The Mijas Town Council’s Departments for Foreigners and Social Services are launching Apemex, a programme to support elderly foreigners in the town. This initiative was born “from Foreigners, Social Services, and groups in constant contact with foreigners in the town. We have all joined forces to work together to provide help to elderly foreigners who may, at some point, for various reasons, find themselves a little lonely, lost, or in a situation in which they may need support from the administration or any of these groups,” explained the Councillor for Foreigners, Arancha López (Cs). The initiative arose when “we spoke with the Foreigners Department and organised the first meeting. We put forward the idea, and now this second meeting has arisen to specific cases we are already aware of through the groups. The idea is to have a network of these elderly people who may need support and help in their day-to-day lives,” said the Social Services Councillor, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE).
The groups In addition, Age Care, Red Cross, Soroptimist International, British Benevolent Fund, Age Concern, Mijas Local Police, the Lions Club of La Cala, and the British Legion are the groups that complete this working group. “We are delighted to collaborate with these associations as we believe it is essential to work together to help anyone in need. At the same time, we hope to reach more beneficiaries,” added British Legion member Margery Taylor.
Apemex aims to help elderly foreigners with administrative procedures, transport to medical appointments, emergency cases, nursing care, translation or legal advice, or any other issue or situation that may arise in their day-to-day lives.
