A new Spanish course for Ukrainians has started

  • The Foreigners' Department promotes the workshop and the one taken up by the Popular University in September.

The course will be at La Cala Cultural Centre from Monday, 8th August

Ulyana Grygorash is the course instructor. She has volunteered to teach Spanish to her compatriots, who are still going through difficult times. The war is not over, and the Ukrainians continue to flee their country as refugees. There are currently 1,192 Ukrainians living in Mijas, 238 more than when the war broke out. I like to help people, I know this language, and I can teach these classes," says Ulyana shyly, who admits she is not a teacher but has trained to speak Spanish and teach the language to her fellow citizens. "I studied to learn Spanish, my little girl also helped me with my homework, and that's how I learned well. I think I learned very well", she says with a laugh.

These classes will be on Mondays at 6:30 pm and Thursdays at 11:30 am at La Cala Cultural Centre. There are already 20 students, most war refugees of all ages. " From a 7-year-old child to a 68-year-old woman", Ulyana points out.

The classes will start on Monday, the 8th. They will initially run until mid-September, but we would like to extend them. If you want to sign up, you can email or call Ulyana (ulyana.ua@hotmail.com / 666316063) or contact the Department of Foreigners. The Councillor responsible, Arancha Lopez (Cs), stressed that "we are talking about both refugees and Ukrainian residents, anyone who wants to come to do the course can contact the Department of Foreigners. We started with two groups of about 20 very interested students. It has been a popular course among them, so as it could not be otherwise, the Department of Foreigners has set to work to meet this demand.

This workshop adds to the one that, in March, in response to the arrival of war refugees, was set up by the Popular University in Las Lagunas' Cultural Centre. The Councillor for this area, Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), announced that "from September, we are going to resume the Spanish classes specifically for Ukrainians given the special circumstances that are occurring within the normal language activities carried out by the Popular University". Until now, this course has been in Las Lagunas, but in September, they say, the classes will also be held in La Cala.
