The project for remodelling the Costa del Sol Hippodrome athletics track is entering its last phase. It was announced this morning by the Town Planning Councillor, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), who stated that this is "a historic demand". "The current facilities are more than twenty years old and is worned by use, the passage of time, and the inclement weather which is wearing them down," added the Councillor. This action not only includes the renovation of the track surface but also the base and lighting. At present, these sports infrastructures have seven lighting towers that are deficient and which will also be implemented. In addition, there will be an adaptation of the surrounding facilities. "There will also be a renovation of the supplies and drainage of the track, supervision and adaptation of the facilities and the sports furniture is also considered, such as fitting a safety throwing cage," explained Ruiz.
The remodelling project has a budget of 42,500 euros."The refurbishment will affect the surface and the base where drainage and water supply mechanisms will help for the environment. It, in turn, will reinforce the lifespan of the runway". In addition, "all the equipment will be state-of-the-art and will require little maintenance, as this track will be used by some 400 people every day," he concluded.
As Ruiz pointed out, the Town Hall will have the project drafted by the end of this year, and ready to execute throughout 2023. "Our approach is for the future as it is not only for improving the existing facilities but also for remodelling them in such a way that they are leading in their field. Besides our athletics club that gives us so much satisfaction, athletes from all over Spain, and even from abroad, can make use of them for their training sessions", said Ruiz, who does not rule out "the organisation of high-level sporting events" in these facilities.
