Mijas’ employment is growing. It was made clear last Tuesday by the Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), and the Councillor responsible for the area, Laura Moreno (PSOE), at a press conference. They released relevant data such as the growth of affiliations in the self-employed scheme that has taken place in Mijas in the last two years. “It has placed the town as an Andalusian reference in terms of job creation,” said municipal sources, or the decrease in unemployment. “According to the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia, on the number of Social Security affiliates in the region, our town is the municipality with more than 10,000 affiliations, and the highest percentage of self-employed, with 29.2 per cent from June’s 2022 data,” said the Councillor. 
For the government team, these figures are evidence of the growth of the city and the economic recovery achieved since the pandemic outbreak. “These data demonstrate how the Business and Self-Employment Rescue Office launched in 2019, along with the pioneering OREA Plan worth 12 million euros for our family businesses and self-employed, and the subsequent Cometha Plan, worth 10.4 million, have had a direct impact on the creation and maintenance of employment.  Not only have we not lost jobs, but also have we increased them. We are at the head of the Andalusian municipalities with an increase of more than 1,100 members registered as self-employed,” said the Mijas Councillor. 
The city reached June with 7,129 workers registered in the self-employed system, as announced by the Mayor and the Councillor for Employment Promotion at a press conference, representing an increase of 1,105 registrations since March 2019.  For Moreno, “are the result of a firm commitment of this local government to boost employment and promote opportunities. Remember that only with the first aid line we launched, OREA Plan. It helped 2,632 self-employed who received some, and 896 companies that benefited reaching almost all of the 12 million euros allocated,” added the Councillor. She considered these data are a boost “to continue implementing new pioneering initiatives in the province and the region. Training is also present so that the Mijas business fabric “continues to grow and consolidate as a reference of good shape,” she said. 
For González, this “boost to employment” has also meant that “the unemployment rate will fall from 17.9% in 2019 to 15.11% in 2022”.
The local government stated it continues promoting new initiatives of importance for employment opportunities generation, “as we have already done with the Operational Programme Mijas Impulsa. It had a job placement rate of 60%, adapting, in any case, the new training and workshops to the demands of the current labour market,” explained the Employment Councillor.

Overall figures

In terms of global figures, the Town Hall points out that the self-employed represent 17.5 per cent of the total number of affiliations in the region, with 21 municipalities with more than 10,000 affiliations having a percentage of self-employed workers of more than 20 per cent.
