“We approved a budget responding to Mijas needs, the municipality that has grown the most in the province last year. A budget in which we maintain the lowest taxes in the province to facilitate daily life for all Mijeños and Mijeñas and in which we are firmly committed to economic recovery with investments for the creation of new infrastructure for Mijas transformation, the commitment to social policies and the improvement of services”. With these words, the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), accompanied by the First Deputy Mayor José Carlos Martín (Cs) and the Finance Councillor, Roy Pérez (PSOE), presented the Mijas Town Council’s municipal budgets for 2022. It amounts to 111.2 million euros, 7.79% more than in 2021, after their initial approval in an extraordinary plenary session. 
González highlighted the increase such as those destined for “cleaning and waste collection, which increases to 9.8 million; the investment in social services to 3.5 million; the 41% increase for the elderly”. Besides, the commitment to employment and the opportunities’ created with an investment of 3.5 million for the social and labour insertion programme Renta Básica, “which has allowed 1,000 unemployed residents be hired in the last year,” he added. 
Martín, for his part, explained that this year’s accounts base on three pillars: “investments, social aid and improved services”. “With this financial cocktail, we are committed to generating employment and supporting the most vulnerable people,” said the First Deputy Mayor. Also, he pointed out that “the Town Hall has kept taxes such as IBI, IVTM and rubbish frozen for seven years, and has a surplus in the municipal treasury as a result of responsible management. Using public money wisely has enabled the municipality to cope with such complicated situations as the pandemic and the resulting economic crisis”.
Among the improved services, the government team highlighted the financial allocation for street cleaning, which has increased by almost 45 per cent compared to the previous year, surpassing the 5 million euro threshold, plus 4.7 million euros for waste collection and treatment. In addition, 2.4 million euros are earmarked for the waste plant. 
For Social Services, “more than 3.5 million euros have been allocated, 15 per cent more than in 2021”, said González. Although the allocation is once again unlimited, it can be increased depending on the needs of the citizens. Specifically, the budget’s provision for services under the Homecare Assistance Programme of the Dependency Law by the municipal supplement increases by 307,726 euros or 18.59%. Social emergency aid will reach 250,000 euros, an increase of 25%; family economic aid will be 175,000 euros, 40% more than in 2021, and rental aid will increase by 33.33% to 200,000 euros.
The Mayor also pointed out that he will not forget “the impulse of much-needed infrastructures such as the nursing home, the fire station or connections such as the widening of Camino Coín or Camino de Campanales”. “This year, including the budget and the amendment, we have almost 50 million euros in works and infrastructure. Some 14 million euros of the award are in place to start the works and 24 million euros are already in ‘Contracting’ to follow the course of the public tender,” said Martín. He added that “these investments have a twofold objective, on the one hand, to create jobs and, on the other hand, to improve services to citizens”.
Among the new projects included in this budget is the construction of the ‘Los Santos’ car park, the widening of the Entrerríos and La Cala road, and the section between ‘Venta La Morena’ and Mijas Golf. In addition, there are plans for the complete remodelling of Calle Archidona, Avenida de Las Mimosas, Camino de Coín, the Las Lagunas clean point and the overpass from the Parroquia San Manuel to the other side of the A7.
