So far this year, more than twenty women have been murdered at their partners’ or ex-partners’ hands in Spain. This figure shows that further work must be done in this area. For this reason, the group for the prevention and care of foreign victims of gender violence, Viogenex, held its quarterly meeting on Thursday 21st. As Arancha López (Cs), Councillor for Foreigners at Mijas Town Hall, said, “these are meetings in which we pool all the information we have. We contribute new things to continue taking steps to attend those suffering from this violence and who, on occasions, being foreigners, can be at a great loss”.
The group is made up of the Foreigners, Equality and Diversity and Local Police Departments, and social groups such as Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, Lions Club, Age Care, and the Red Cross. “From these meetings, interesting ideas and initiatives come out, which is why we must continue working,” explained López. Some initiatives, such as joining campaigns to prevent male violence like ‘Ask for Ángela’, have emerged from these meetings. This campaign was born in the UK in 2006. It was implemented in Mijas, to which the Mayor added that “in Mijas, there are people of 124 nationalities registered. So, such groups that provide this service merge, cohesive, and luckily must organise to work as a team”. Victims of gender violence can call 016 24 hours a day or the Women’s Centre on 900 200 999, where they receive assistance in 46 languages.
