Many agreed. The 436th-anniversary of the apparition of the Virgen de la Peña was one of the most attended events in honour of the patron saint in recent memory. The Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), pointed out that "after four centuries, the Mijas people's devotion to our perpetual patron saint is still much alive and strong". "Today is a special day for us because we are enjoying our traditions calmly and peacefully", said the First Deputy Mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs).

The Compás Chapel was again, last Thursday 2nd, the setting for the celebration of this date, which the 'Virgen de la Peña' Brotherhood has been organising for weeks so that not a single detail is missing. The Mijas Pueblo parish priest, Francisco Villasclaras, was in charge of the sermon taking place outside the church, a moment he used to appeal for respect between equals. "Since we all have good feelings, we must make them grow and not break or mistreat the feelings of others”, said the priest.

After the mass attended by many children, the traditional hymn dedicated to the Mijas patron saint was sung. Then, the parishioners entered the chapel to pay their respects to the 'Virgen de la Peña'. As José Ignacio Ruiz, a brotherhood member said, " today, we have shown that Mijas continue to be Mijas despite the passing of centuries, epidemics, plagues, and calamities. The 'Virgen de la Peña' continues to bring together many devotees from outside the municipality, Spain, and the whole world". According to tradition, the Virgin image appeared within the old castle's walls in 1586. It was discovered by a bricklayer whose children were guided to the site by a dove.
