After two years without being able to celebrate the traditional “Sardinada” of La Cala on May 1st, Labour Day, last Sunday

Right on the beach, with enviable sunshine and an unbeatable atmosphere. After two years without being able to celebrate the traditional “Sardinada” of La Cala on May 1st, Labour Day, last Sunday, everything went “ very well”. “The sardines are delicious, this is something wonderful, typical of Malaga, and they have had a great idea to do something like this”, commented a neighbour who didn’t want to miss the event, África Rodríguez. The same was said by another visitor, Juana Ruiz: “I come here, every year, and I was looking forward to it, after two years of the pandemic”.

“It is a pride to see the streets of La Cala full of people, Mijeños, visitors ... who come to enjoy this traditional festival, in spectacular weather that complements our beaches. We are happy to recover this year a seafaring tradition like ours as is the “espeto de Sardinas”, said the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who enjoyed this event for the first time as the first municipal authority. “It is a day to enjoy, and for me especially, not only because is my birthday today, but it is a special day for me because it is the first time I can enjoy this “Sardinada” as Mayor, and I am enjoying it particularly. I would like to thank all those who make it possible for this tradition to continue being so much a part of our heritage because truly all those who make it possible are all the people of Mijas,” said Gonzalez.

More than 600 kilos of sardines

“Approximately 100 sardines boxes are cooked. It is about 640 kilos of sardines, and approximately 2,500 people can eat, at a relation of about six sardines per person, for example,” commented Francisco Vera, one of the master “espeteros”, who added that in about 12 minutes, the sardines could be ready. “And let’s remember that this year, the “espetos” are prepared by our municipal workers. Something that was lost in previous years, and which we wanted to recover as it encourages, even more, the closeness of the Town Hall to this tradition so dear to us”, added the Mayor who also had the opportunity to prepare some of the “espetos” (sardines).

The weather was fine throughout the day, and people responded to the Town Hall’s invitation. In the “El Torreón” Square, there were children’s entertainment and live music in the marquee set up for the occasion.
