The CSIC backs the cataloguing of the Mijas-Alpujata mountain range as a natural park

  • The Junta has already unanimously approved a non-legislative proposal for the creation of this status in the mountain range
  • Councillor for the Environment of Mijas Town Hall, Arancha López (Cs) |

A report was drawn up by the "Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas", part of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which endorses this designation

It has been the Research Group "Multiscale Geographical Analysis of Global Change" of the Institute of Economics, Geography and Demography, dependent on the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which has produced this report that supports the classification of the Sierra de Mijas-Alpujata as a natural park. "We already have environmental reasons to protect the biodiversity that exists in the mountains, also social reasons, since it would be very beneficial for the Mijas municipality to have a natural park. With these reports, we also have scientific reasons that support what we have been saying for a long time," said the Councillor for the Environment of Mijas Town Hall, Arancha López (Cs), from the viewpoint of the Vírgen de la Peña Square with unbeatable mountain views.

This document, says the Councillor, is another step towards achieving this classification, something which, she stresses, they have been working on. "We have already taken it to the Junta de Andalucía with a "Propuesta No de Ley", Non-law proposal which was debated and approved unanimously, with all the political parties agreeing on the importance of creating this status in the municipality of Mijas".

In this sense, the Sierra de Mijas-Alpujata, with 29,000 hectares, would become the sixth protected area in the province of Malaga, along with Los Montes, Sierra de las Nieves, Almijara, also Granada, and the Alcornocales and Grazalema in Cadiz. "All this nature in Mijas and the other eight municipalities would be part of this project. It requires we continue working together to protect it as the Sierra de Mijas-Alpujata deserves to be a Natural Park," concludes the Councillor.
