They are three Mijas families, each from a different nucleus, which show the evolution of women over four generations. They are the lives of Lola Blanco, Francisca Ruiz and Carmen Ruiz 'La Picón' and their families. Mijas Communication, in collaboration with the Equality Department, has produced the documentary 'Across Generations. We are 8M' It is a work where daughters, mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers open their hearts to tell us how they lived and how they see life. Today, on the occasion of International Women's Day, this moving report has been presented in the hall of the Town Hall. An emotional event that Mijas 3.40 TV has offered live.
The Equality and Diversity Councillor, Natalia Martínez (PSOE) said that there is no better way to start this 8M than dedicating it to our elders. We have rights, opportunities, and freedoms today, as they have fought relentlessly. They are an example of life and overcoming". She added that "from your homes, environment or family environment they have done so much for future generations that they were not even aware that they were doing feminism. That transforming feminism that we need so much".
For his part, the Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), said that: "this legacy that you leave us, this immaterial legacy, is what transcends time so that we never forget that this documentary serves to remember how we have evolved as a society and, at the same time, it shows that some things do not change. In some cases, there are inequalities, such as wage inequalities, and the fact that women earn 27% less than men".
Celebration and vindication
Martínez stressed that "we have rights and freedoms, but we lack many opportunities. We have to continue working together hand in hand, 8M is a day of celebration for what has been achieved, but not everything is done". The Equality and Diversity Councillor stated: "I only hope and wish that everything my grandmother and my mother taught me, I can pass on to my daughter and my son. All the rights we have today, we maintain them and continue to move forward so that we leave our children a better world".
It is impossible not to remember the grandmothers we had who have gone, but who have not been forgotten. Watching the documentary, "I have remembered, today, and it has been inevitable, my grandmothers, Carmen Ruiz and Carmen Muñoz, who were, like you, people who fought in the countryside to get ahead, they lived in complicated conditions, without resources, living practically from day-to-day, taking care of the house, the family, the animals", recalled the Mayor.
'Across Generations. We are 8M' is immersed in Mijas women's history, but it is also a tribute to families with deep roots in our municipality. Lucía Sanmiguel Peña, great-granddaughter of Lola Blanco, said about the documentary that: "it is very nice and exciting, especially to see the women evolution in life, we have to keep fighting for our rights, although we have already come a long way, we have to keep going". For her part, Rosalía Porras, daughter of Francisca Ruiz, said that: "it is good, very beautiful and emotional, the documentary recalls many past times", to which she added that "women are prospering, they are coming out of where we were before, the truth is that this is very important".
The Councillor thanked all those who have made this documentary possible because "you are a reference for us, for Mijas, and for that reason, we will always carry you in our hearts".
