The Sports Area allocated 480,000 euros to subsidise clubs and events in 2021

  • In total, 106,000 euros more were granted this year than in 2020
  • Some cycling, rugby and chess clubs have already shown interest, according to the Sports Councillor |

The Councillor responsible for the Department, Andrés Ruiz, considers that this year, more money will be dedicated to subsidies as there are more clubs interest

The Mijas Town Hall Sports Department has taken stock of the grants awarded last year. It totalled 479,904.35 euros. Of this, 320,408.03 euros went to all the sports clubs that applied. The Councillor responsible for the Department, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), thanked them, and the Area's staff for their collaboration in bringing the procedures to a successful conclusion. "It was a joint effort as there was abundant required documentation from the Sports Area to be presented by the clubs. All this has been in coordination with the Sports Department advice," said the Councillor, who recalled that an email address and telephone number were made available exclusively for this purpose.

The aim of these subsidies, added Ruiz, is to "support" these clubs and "give continuity to their growth and sporting activity".  Also, to "support the families" and "consolidate" the Mijas sports brand. "These athletes, in the end, compete in other municipalities, in other provinces of Spain. Some even transcend Spanish borders and have been competing internationally," added the Councillor.

The rest of the amount, 159,496.32 euros, is earmarked for subsidies for "cycling, tennis, paddle tennis and golf "sporting events, said Ruiz. In addition, the Councillor highlighted the increase for 2020, of the total by 106,027.42 euros, which is almost "30% more". The clubs have more expenses as they have more athletes and more competitions. Moreover, sporting events have also been subsidised.

The trend for the coming years
For Ruiz, this increase in subsidies in 2021, compared to the previous year, will be repeated in 2022: "I believe that this is the trend for the coming years because Mijas inexorably supports sport and will continue its growth with this joint work with sports clubs. The aim is also to consolidate our sporting activity and, in short, to promote the sport, which is one of the municipal competences of this Town Hall".

In this sense, Ruiz said that when the new application call comes out, it will be promoted, so that "more clubs in Mijas can apply for this subsidy". Some cycling, rugby and chess clubs have already shown interest, according to the Sports Councillor. "We are one of the municipalities, if not the only one, that supports sport economically. That has transcended and, we are, therefore, a national and regional reference". Ruiz stressed that "federations and sporting events companies," say that Mijas has become "a powerful sports brand".
