The health professionals of the Costa del Sol Health District have gathered at Las Lagunas Health Centre today to say, once again, "enough of verbal aggressions" and to show their repulsion at the latest threat and verbal aggression suffered. Last Tuesday, a woman hurled insults and threats at the health workers working at the Cortijo Don Elías vaccination centre after demanding to be vaccinated without an appointment. This person had to be taken away from the premises.

During the rally, a manifesto was read out and a minute's silence was observed "to show our repulsion", according to Carmen Cuenca, the nursing district director.

Antonio Luis Cansino, Hospital Costa del Sol Managing Director, also took part in the rally, who wanted to express "the rejection for the verbal agression and support for the health colleagues' activity and work. And, above all, my repulsion for any type of aggression. It cannot be condoned". According to Cansino, "we have gone from applause and thanks during the confinement, to all this. It has been hard for everyone, but let them not forget that those who have had the worst time were the health workers who risked their lives and their families".

For his part, Miguel Gallardo, a nurse at Las Lagunas centre, denounces that "this type of situation has normalised and this cannot be accepted. We are assuming a lack of respect, indignity, insults and threats of all kinds. We have gone from being applauded to being reviled. And we do not deserve this. Society is fed up with what is happening. Primary care needs to be reinforced financially and in terms of personnel. The system can always be improved, but don't forget that we health workers are always there to help", Gallardo pointed out.

Unions

The SATSE and CCOO union's head, also present at today's call, have shown "their support and rejection of the situation". Juan Jesús González, SATSE nursing delegate, affirmed that "this is becoming a scourge and is becoming normalised on a social level". Félix Sáenz, CCOO primary care head, confirmed that "the problem is already well known, but it is still serious that the measures approved at the sectoral roundtables on the prevention of assaults have not been implemented yet".

Political representatives' support

The Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE), together with part of his team, attended the health workers' meeting to show the support of the entire local government. "It seems that we have forgotten that it has been the health workers who have been suffering COVID the worst during the whole pandemic. I want to make Mijas citizens understand that the lack of staff and health resources is not the fault of those doing their job".

The non-attached Councillor Esperanza Jiménez, also present at the event, recalled that "we are back with them again to demand the same thing, respect for public health professionals".
