The town has obtained the Rural Tourism Capital distinction 2022 in Malaga

From more than 8,100 villages in Spain, Mijas is among the 50 capitals of Rural Tourism, according to the report prepared by the portal clubrural.com. This news has been applauded by Mijas Town Hall. "In 2021, we were already listed as one of the 20 rural coastal destinations preferred by its users in Spain. This year, we have managed to win the distinction of Rural Tourism Capital 2022 in Malaga. It is a recognition for all the work and effort that this government team has been developing to place Mijas in the top, not only of Malaga municipalities but also in Andalusia", says the Mijas Mayor, Josele González (PSOE). He has, once again, stressed the importance of continuing to focus on quality tourism where nature, traditions and outdoor sports play a key role. Mijas is not only the sun and beaches, our municipality has a wide range of tourism that goes beyond these two segments so exploited in the Costa del Sol".

As Gonzalez recalled, "Mijas had a large visitors' influx from the Spanish territory last summer. National tourism was our great lifeline in 2021, and we are sure that the hard work we did in 2021, will bear fruit in 2022".

Rural Club has taken into account when drawing up this list, the preferred and most sought after municipalities by users in each province. Also, they have scored a series of factors such as location, the average price of accommodation, health measures, the supply of hotels, natural attributes or tourist activities in the area, among other factors. "It is not surprising that Mijas is at the top of these rankings because our tourist offer is wide and perfectly suited to all kinds of tastes. Within the rural area, we have a lot to offer. A large geographical extension means that we do not have overcrowded beaches, nor mountains or in any of the activities we carry out," says the First Deputy Mayor and the Tourism Councillor, José Carlos Martín (CS). Also, he adds that "we do not leave any segment behind, as we know how to adapt to circumstances and work to the best market trends at all times. In the last two years, we were concerned to be a safe place with COVID- 19 and offer all those new travel formulas that tourists demand".

Mijas, the favourite in Malaga

Thus, Mijas is the favourite municipality for travellers in Malaga. "Think that within the whole of Spain, one municipality, per province, was chosen and Mijas has stood out above all others and with a certain advantage," said Martín, who highlighted the high level of competition that Mijas faces in the province, which gives extra value to this recognition. "This award is valuable for us because we compete with major tourist destinations. We are not in a province characterised by not having attractive destinations, but on the contrary, being in the heart of the Costa del Sol and the surrounding municipalities are also attractive destinations. This time, we have been the winners and chosen by users, for a reason," said Martin.

In Andalusia, the villages highlighted by 'clubrural.com' are: Mijas (Malaga), Motril (Granada), Tabernas (Almeria), Aldeaquemada (Jaen), Lucena (Cordoba), Cazalla de la Sierra (Seville), Cortegana (Huelva) and El Bosque (Cadiz).

 Touristic Commitment

In this way, Mijas is gradually recovering its tourist industry. Big Data and artificial intelligence offer information that would place the municipality in pre-pandemic numbers, that is to say, this season would reach the figures of 2019. "From the Tourism Department, we are working hard to recover not only in the short term but also in the long term. We are reaping the fruits of the promotion we did for the local tourist. We have also sown at the international level, especially in the eastern market that is the most loyal to our destination. It is the one that spends the most in the municipality. We hope that by this Autumn, we will start to see the results," said the First Deputy Mayor.

Finally, the Councillor declared that these distinctions are not the result of chance, but that behind them, there is an important tourist commitment from the Town Hall: "We want to highlight the work that is being done by the Tourism Department to make Mijas an important tourist destination. It is using all the tools that we have, and the work is reflected in this type of recognition".
