Members of the Foreigners Department, the Mijas Women’s Centre, Local Police, Civil Guard, Red Cross and several social groups, such as Soroptimist International, Age Care and the Lions Club, form Viogenex, this working group that, since 2014, work helping and advising foreign victims of gender violence. This Thursday 27th, they met at La Cala Cultural Centre again, the first meeting of the year, with the aim of improving the monitoring of cases. “We are going to take stock of the cases we have had in 2021, some of them are still open to continue with their monitoring. We are going to establish the lines of work that we are going to carry out during this year 2022, to help all these foreign victims of gender violence,” said the Mijas Town Hall Councillor for Foreigners Department, Arancha López (Cs).
They assured that more and more tools and resources are being added to this established protocol, aimed at more immediate and safe attention.  “The Women’s Centre exists, it is a public service that is there to provide service and immediate response to all women. For this reason, we have published flyers, both in English and Spanish, which are in all municipal offices and in those of the emergency and security forces, both Local Police and Civil Guard, so that all women know the comprehensive care we provide from the Women’s Centre to victims of gender violence,” said the Councillor for Equality and Diversity, Natalia Martinez (PSOE).

Collaboration In addition to the psychological care and legal advice provided by the Women’s Centre, the work of the Local Police, Guardia Civil and Social Services is joined by that of the Red Cross, together with the social groups that make up Viogenex. “We take care of accompanying them, both to the gender violence court and processing any documents. As many of them are foreigners and do not know how the bureaucracy works; the Soroptimist association helps us a lot as they speak 42 languages; in addition, we supply them with hygiene kits, clothes... Whatever they need at the time, above all, human warmth, so that they are not alone or helpless”, said the Head of the gender violence unit of the Red Cross, Encarni Cobos. According to the Guardia Civil, the number of cases of mistreatment increases in summer, but day by day, they stress, they also work to raise awareness of this crime and to eradicate it, and to convey to victims the message that they are not alone, that the Guardia Civil is at their side.
