In 2020, Mijas grew in population despite the pandemic, and in 2021 it repeats the figures. During the last 12 months, the municipality has seen its population grow by more than 2,200 people, which translates into a total of 91,154 registered residents, as announced this morning by the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), and the Councillor for Statistics, Roy Pérez (PSOE).
"Mijas continues to receive new residents, surpassing, for the first time in history, the 90,000 inhabitants. People choose our municipality for the quality of its services and the friendliness of its neighbours. Mijas Town Hall certifies the good health that this town enjoys. Also, it is a cosmopolitan city that has 127 different nationalities, being the British community most numerous, with almost 10,000 inhabitants. This fact consolidates Mijas as the first city of Andalucía with the largest British community", says the Mijas Councillor, who has stressed that "the second community with the largest presence in the town is the Nordic, with 2,886, leading the Swedes with 900 residents".
Looking at numbers closely, the Spaniards add up to 60,854 registrations, while foreigners have grown by a thousand in the last year and exceeded the barrier of 30,000. Other nationalities, with a presence in the municipality, are Moroccan with 2,500, Italians with 1,500, and German with 1,020 registered residents. Apart from them, there are citizens from Eastern European countries such as Russia, with almost a thousand (991), Ukraine with 900 residents or Argentinians with 772 registered residents. In this particular, Mijas is once again getting closer to the foreign population figures. It was back in 2016, when the number of residents of other nationalities exceeded 31,000.
Registration
"These are important data which show that Mijas is chosen as a place to live not only by people from other municipalities but also by foreigners. Taking all these into account, we would like to ask all those who are not registered yet, to take this step, because it also has an economic impact on the municipality. The National Government, or the Junta de Andalucía, when it comes to economic transfers that provide health services, education or infrastructure and roads, the data they take as a reference is of those who are registered. For this reason, it is important that the registration data and actual residents are as accurate as possible," adds Pérez.
In just three years, Mijas has grown by more than 4,300 people. From 86,806 in 2019 to the current 91,154, of which 1,400 are foreigners. This indicates that the town, the third-largest city in the province of Málaga, is not only among the favourites as a tourist destination but also as a city to live in.
"More and more people are choosing Mijas as a place to live, and this is largely due to the low density of the municipality. While in Fuengirola, the population density is around 7,000 inhabitants per square kilometre, or in Marbella 1,500 inhabitants per square kilometre, in Mijas, we barely exceed 500 inhabitants per square kilometre. It means that living and consolidating a family or work project in our municipality is much better than in surrounding municipalities", concludes González.
