A total of 110 large-scale actions have been carried out during the first three months of the school year in the town’s primary schools, carried out by the Education Department’s own school maintenance team. “These are masonry, plumbing, gardening and many other types of work. For example, we have fixed roofs in some schools, bathrooms, uneven pavements, especially in areas with trees where the roots had raised the pavement, and it was not safe for the children. And many actions that were necessary for our schools because they are old and need to be maintained,” said the Mayor of Education, Mariló Olmedo (Cs). In addition, the daily tasks carried out by the caretakers of each school, such as cleaning the playgrounds, monitoring the water chlorine level, controlling the entry and exit of children and repairing the daily breakdowns that occur in the facilities.
The Education Department has also highlighted the implementation of 83 school councils. “I would like to thank the parents, mothers and teachers who take part in the councils because, to be honest, attendance is always one hundred per cent and they are very involved in them. I have had 19 COVID commissions, and we continue with them, where all the protocols are reviewed,” Olmedo added.
In terms of cleaning, the service contract has been extended, as an anti-COVID preventive measure, which means that 25 additional cleaners will be deployed from 9 am to 2 pm in the centres to carry out disinfection work in communal and contact areas.

The Councillor said, that “the balance is positive. Our schools are still in operation, the COVID has affected us a little in the last two weeks because there has been a higher rate outside the schools. But, it is true, they are still safe, they are not exempt from COVID, but we have not had any outbreaks of infection inside the schools, they have all come from outside, and we have not had any schools closed. The trimester went quite well.
During this first quarter, various initiatives have been launched, such as the CPR and first aid workshops, the collection of toys for the Red Cross and the responsible pet awareness campaign, the latter in coordination with the Health Department. The area’s agenda for 2022, includes the recovery of programmes such as: ‘Get to know your municipality’ and others that will be developed in collaboration with other Departments like the Local Police, Health and the Environment.
