The route is organised in aid of Cáritas. It has an environmental character, and will also give away numerous prizes

Thanking their collaboration, Mijas Town Hall, on Monday afternoon, presented a gift to all the businesses, associations and brotherhoods that have taken part in the Solidarity Tree Route, which this year celebrates its sixth edition. The visit was attended, by the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), the Councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (Cs), the Councillors Laura Moreno (PSOE) and Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), as well as the coordinator of this route, Antonia Núñez, who is also president of the association La Alegría de la Huerta Andaluza.

According to Núñez, the route is being held this year in aid of Cáritas from Mijas Pueblo and, as well as being a charity event, will also be giving away many prizes. "Neighbours and visitors who are interested in participating, have only to contribute one euro to purchase a triptych where the 22 solidarity trees are shown. "They will vote for their favourite, and will automatically be entered into a draw, for the gifts that have been given away by the Mijas shopkeepers themselves", he explained.

Martín said, during the tour,"these trees stand out not only for their creativity, but also for their environmental component because they all have been made with reused materials". He also encouraged the public to visit each of the participating trees "because they give a different charm to Mijas Pueblo at Christmas time, to the extent that there are people who come specifically to see these wonderful recycled trees".

Zapico recalled that different municipal departments have also collaborated in the initiative, such as the Department of Tourism that has published the leaflets. Operational Services has been responsible for assembling the trees, or the Popular University (UP), which has offered space to accumulate the materials used in the trees. "Even some users of the UP handicraft workshops have taken advantage of these classes, or of their skills to apply their knowledge and know-how to these trees," added Zapico. Also, he took the opportunity to thank "the tireless work" of Antonia Núñez, who "has been attentive to this route at all times".

Gift raffle

There is still time to participate in the sixth Árboles Solidarios route. You only need to buy the triptych, mark your favourite tree, and place it in the ballot boxes. They have been set up in the Tourist Office in Mijas Pueblo, in the Bootello pharmacy, or the Siete Caños Healthcare store, "The draw will take place on the evening of the 5th of January and, when the ballot is drawn, the winner will be called. Then, you will be told the prize you have won, and the shop where you will have to go to collect it," concluded Núñez.
