The city welcomes Christmas with the Christmas lights and a zambombá

In addition to the zambombá, which featured singers and guitarists and the choir of the Peña Flamenca Unión del Cante, Las Lagunas Pastoral took part

Mijas welcomed Christmas last Sunday 5th, with the Christmas lights and a zambombá in the heat of the fire. The Virgen de la Peña Square in Mijas Pueblo was the meeting point to kick off the Christmas celebrations. "After the difficult year we have had throughout 2020, we wanted to return to the tradition that we had instilled from this government team to inaugurate Christmas in style, as we did in La Cala in 2019. This year it was Mijas Pueblo's turn and the truth is that it has been a switch-on that has been enjoyed by children, and adults alike," said the Mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), who said that in 2022 it will be in Las Lagunas.

With the switching on of the lights, this is the starting signal for numerous activities for these fiestas, some of which were planned for Sunday, November 28th, but could not get underway due to the strong wind. "With the inauguration of the illumination of the lights, an endless number of activities will begin, especially for the little ones to enjoy, as December is the month dedicated to children, the month of illusion", said the Councillor for Fiestas of Mijas Town Hall, Tamara Vera (PSOE). But December is also a month to be with the family and to show solidarity: "From here we wish all Mijas families a Merry Christmas, and we hope this party help us to forget a little the time we have spent with the COVID and that it serves as an experience to have this Christmas with family and, above all, being in solidarity with everyone," said the spokesman of the Municipal Group Cs, José Carlos Martín.

Zambombá
A zambombá close to small bonfires enlivened the switching on of the Christmas lights. Sebastián Navas, El Petro, Juanjo Lavado, Enrique Heredia, Doly Pérez and the Choir of the Peña Flamenca Unión del Cante gave voice to a family evening, with the guitars of Paco Aragón, Diego Morilla and Heredia; the dancing of Tatiana and the cajón of Miguel Ángel Rojas. The Pastoral Las Lagunas also played and did so just before the lighting. "We also seek to preserve traditions with the flamenco zambombá and the performance of the Las Lagunas Pastoral, which has been the prelude to the lighting of this Christmas in Mijas," said the Mayor to clarify that the events have been carried out "with all security measures".

Intending to preserve these traditions, Francisco Morales 'El Chaqueta', from Las Lagunas Pastoral, explained that they played "a Christmas carol from Mijas". "Christmas for us is everything because it is fun that we have had since we were kids," he added. The pastoral will play again on 19th December during the Villa de Mijas contest, although this year the group has fewer performances than at other Christmases due to the pandemic situation, explained another pastor, Ana Núñez. From the Choir Unión del Cante, Salvador Aragonés explained that they tried "to do their best to entertain the people" who came to the Virgen de la Peña Square. Their performances will continue over the next few days; the next one, on Saturday 18th at the Peña Flamenca Unión del Cante, at 4 pm, said his partner Manuel Rojas.

Other activities
In addition to the zambombá, last Sunday there were other activities to liven up the day, dedicated, above all, to the little ones, with children's entertainment, an ice rink and hot chocolate. "The lights are incredible, I loved them," said Erika Rico. "They are super cool," said Sara Alarcón. "We have played with the children´s entertainers, watched the flamenco show, also, how the Mayor pressed the button lights, and the ice rink, which makes a 10 altogether", added both of them. Irene Fernández, Ana Leiva and Olivia Alarcón were among the afternoon's skaters, although the activity "is a bit difficult," said Fernández. "You fall a bit because you slip," added Leiva. "The skating rink and the lights are what I liked the most," added Alarcón. And, as María del Mar Criado pointed out, "the lighting was very nice. We didn't expect it this year, we have never had this in here, and the children were very happy". In addition to Mijas Pueblo, the Christmas lights were also switched on in La Cala and Las Lagunas.
