New workshops aimed at promoting the use of bicycles among schoolchildren get underway

  • The initiative has been set up by the Department of Transport and Mobility and two students from the TECO
  • The students of CEIP Campanales are already enjoying this initiative.

The activity, which will be carried out in nine schools in Mijas, has started to 'roll' in CEIP Los Campanales

We warm-up well, we equip and  protect ourselves, we check that everything fits well, and let's start pedalling. This is how this initiative begins to develop in the Physical Education classes of the sixth year primary pupils. They are the target group for this activity, which aims to promote the use of bicycles among the schoolchildren of Mijas.

  • The Councillor responsible for Transport and Mobility accompanied the schoolchildren.

The workshop will be held in two sessions. One will deal with the knowledge of the bicycle and cycling skills, and the other will focus on road safety education, as explained by one of the instructors, Sergio Sánchez, a trainee student of the Teco at IES Sierra de Mijas, who says that they will focus "on the subject of traffic signs, that they know the signs when cycling on the road, how to signal their movements and how to ride safely, knowing what they are doing; we want them to be as prepared as possible". "Of course," Sánchez adds, "they will also be given instructions on how to have fun on two wheels responsibly.

  • The activity will take place in nine schools in Mijas.

The activity is organised by the Department of Transport and Mobility and two students from Teco, who are doing their internships in this municipal area. The Councillor for Transport and Mobility, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), attended this class; the Councillor stressed that "the important thing is that schoolchildren at an early age understand the importance that the bicycle is acquiring when moving around, especially in urban areas and within close distances; it is also very important that they know how to handle the handlebars and have confidence".

  • The Council is working to promote sustainable mobility in the municipality.

The initiative will reach nine schools and the students seem to like it. More and more schoolchildren are cycling to and from school, which is why the Council is working to promote sustainable mobility in the municipality. "Many directors of primary and secondary schools warn us of the significant increase in the use of bicycles among students, so much that next year, we will promote very important developments from the point of view of bicycle parking at strategic and key points such as libraries and schools," announced Cruz, who also announced that the Mijas Town Hall is developing a Mobility Plan which, he stresses, "will mean a change in the way we move around the city with alternatives to the car.
