Last weekend, Mijas experienced a day of reforestation of native trees in the area of Entrerríos, specifically in the Puerto de la Gitana. During the activity, organised by WWF in collaboration with the Mijas Town Hall, the participants planted around 150 seedlings donated from the municipal nursery.

"This is the tenth year of this campaign, which is carried out throughout the country with local groups of volunteers from the organisation and thanks to collaborating entities such as Mijas Town Hall", explained the coordinator of campaigns with volunteers, Miguel Murcia. The WWF is an organisation that is responsible for the conservation of nature in all types of ecosystems: seas, oceans, wetlands, forests, rivers, etc. It also has a climate and energy programme with food.

On the other hand, the coordinator of the local group of volunteers in Malaga, Juan Pérez, said that "as everything has continuity and ecological connectivity, the aim is to help those areas that were affected by the two fires that this mountain range suffered in 2011 and 2012". The Councillor for the Environment, Arancha López (Cs), for her part, declared that "it is very gratifying to come to this activity, year after year, to help plant in this area and then to see that, little by little, those seedlings that you have helped to grow, go forward", adding that "we are helping to have a much healthier planet and cleaner air".

Reforestation with history

These reforestations are the result of the collaboration agreement signed in 2015 following the fires of 2011 and 2012, and to make the planting possible, the department's technician, Juan Luis Vega, provided the necessary guidelines: "they are in a reforestation area in which previous interventions have already been made, so what they do first is to know the state of last year's plantations to see which are still alive and which are not, and the truth is that we have been surprised because most of them are still alive".

On this occasion, the species chosen were cork oaks, wild olive trees and carob trees, and the Department insisted that maintenance is equally or even more important than planting. "The truth is that we are very happy to be here participating in this activity, the atmosphere is very good," said one of the participants, Ana Martín.
