According to the government team, "the parking problem in Mijas is closer to becoming history". This long-standing neighbourhood demand is beginning to be solved thanks, explains the Executive, "to the Municipal Parking Plan launched by the area of Infrastructures and Works, coordinated by the councillor, José Carlos Martín (Cs), almost six years ago". "This type of major work takes time but we are already seeing the results and the people of Mijas will be able to park more easily in a city that is increasing its population year after year and that has to have a response from the local government to this growth in terms of infrastructure, so we are being proactive, not only to solve the current problem, but also to ensure that it does not happen again," said Martin.
Since 2016, the department has proposed ten public car parks, some of which have been executed, others are with drafted projects and some others with budget approvals for their drafting, as well as the extension of another.
Forthcoming works
In this sense, by 2022 the municipal government will put out to tender the construction of the Los Santos car park, which affects an area of influence of 103,000 square metres, and will be divided into three floors with 364 spaces and an approximate amount of almost 15 million euros, which will be financed between the ordinary budget and the relevant budget modifications. "This area has a huge demand for parking because we are talking about flats that do not have, for the most part, garages, as well as the enormous influx of people that comes with having the Las Lagunas Health Centre, the Social Services Centre and the Popular University so close by," said the councillor, He added that "we are also going to put out to tender the drafting of the projects for three new car parks, one in the area of Doña Ermita, one in Las Cañadas and another one in the Social Services area to reinforce that of Los Santos and the great demand in the area around the health centre". Over the next year, a new one will also be drawn up for Barrio Santana.
In this way, Mijas will have the car parks of El Juncal and La Candelaria in operation in the coming weeks, the projects for Fernán Caballero, Parque de Andalucía and Los Santos (the latter will be put out to tender in the short term) have already been drawn up, and the projects for the car parks for Servicios Sociales, Doña Ermita, Las Cañadas and Barrio de Santana will be drawn up in 2022. The tenth car park in question is the extension of the Virgen de la Peña car park, which is awaiting the sectoral report from Culture, but already has the project drawn up and is ready to allocate the budget and build once the regional administration gives the go-ahead.
