The councillor for Town Planning, Andrés Ruiz (Cs), and for Education, Mariló Olmedo (Cs), reported this week that the Town Hall has now granted the building license for the new Las Lagunas high school, which gives the go-ahead to the Regional Government to start the work. “From the local administration, we have been working hand in hand with the Ministry of Education for six years for the transfer of land and the necessary urban procedures to put an end to the need for school places in this area of Mijas. The awarding of this building license is great news for the educational community, as it represents another step to strengthen Secondary Education in the municipality”, Ruiz pointed out. The new centre will be built on a 7,358 square metre plot located next to the Indira Gandhi CEIP (Primary School) and will be classified as a D6 centre, that is, with 6 lines, which will give rise to 720 new school places. Its investment amounts to 5.5 million euros with an execution period of 18 months and the company awarded the works is Lirola Ingeniería y Obras S.L. “With the start-up of these facilities, Las Lagunas Compulsory Secondary Education students who are studying at the Indira Gandhi due to the lack of space in other high schools, will be able to relocate to this new centre once it is finished”, explained Olmedo, who recalled: “it is precisely these adolescents who attended primary school in the well-known ‘school made of cans’ (prefabricated classrooms) until, after more than five years of struggle, they managed to lay the first stone of the new school”. In this regard, the councillor for Education highlighted “the predisposition of the Ministry to solve the problems of the educational community in Mijas and to work hand in hand with the department”.
