The councillor for Foreigners in the Mijas Town Hall, Arancha López (Cs), attended on Tuesday the 5th one of the social meetings organised by Age Care, a group of English-speaking volunteers that helps foreign retirees residing in Mijas. More than 220 people are part of this group, which also organises different activities to entertain retired senior citizens. “Today, we have come to see the work they do, offer them all our support from the Foreigners department, but also thank them for how they have reacted and helped each other during the pandemic”, said the councillor upon arrival at the Baptist Church of Calahonda, where the group meets.
Specifically, Age Care members dedicate Tuesday and Thursday mornings to doing a little bit of everything: enjoying a good cup of coffee, playing dominoes, practicing sports and even learning Spanish, which never hurts. The group also has a nurse who, once a month, offers medical check-ups and consultations to the elderly, and another volunteer in charge of knowing the main needs of these people. “It is altruistic work, because the group does not charge absolutely anything for the services it provides. In fact, it is funded with the income from the charity shop they have in the Zoco in Calahonda, from the charity campaigns they organise and from donations by individuals”, councillor López explained. Among those there to help the elderly, there are volunteers like Jaap Dubbelman, who accompanies his compatriots acting as translator and taking them in his car wherever they need. “I think I am one of the oldest volunteers in the association but it is a very satisfactory job”, he assured, adding that “at the present moment, Age Care has volunteers not only in Mijas, but also in other nearby municipalities such as Benalmádena, Fuengirola and Coín”.
