The services in honour of the patron saint of Mijas began last Saturday, August 21st, with the proclamation of the Virgen de la Peña Parish Brotherhood and the presentation of the poster, created by photographer Jerónimo Alba, who was unable to attend the event. ‘Mijeño’ Fernando Torres was in charge of exalting the image with his words. It was an afternoon of praise and gratitude to the perpetual mayoress at the gates of her hermitage. “Our patron saint is something that one feels most since birth practically. It is a feeling that is forged since childhood”, assured Torres. Last year’s proclaimer, María Jesús Moreno, was in charge of introducing this ‘mijeño’, “bearer of the Virgin’s throne and great collaborator in the assembly of the parish nativity scene”. Torres, who, like Moreno, received as a sign of gratitude a painting with this year’s poster, reviewed, among other aspects, his experiences, the importance of being a brotherhood and the feeling for the Virgen de la Peña.
With his words, Torres inaugurated the services in honour of the Virgin, which will culminate on September 8th: “We have to celebrate it with the norms that we have, just like last year we will do everything possible so that the ‘novena’ and the celebration of the day of the patron reaches the houses of the town through the media, but we will also have to get used to respecting the capacity limitations”, said the parish priest of Mijas Village, Francisco Villasclaras.

Reactions The  mayor, Josele González (PSOE), and various members of the corporation also attended this proclamation. The mayor highlighted Torres’ participation in various events in Mijas: “He is a very involved person, both he and his family, in all the traditions of Mijas; in addition, he is very close, precisely, to the brotherhood and everything that has to do with our patron, the Virgen de la Peña”, and that is reflected in the emotion aroused by this proclamation “full of feelings”. For his part, deputy mayor José Carlos Martín (Cs) valued the importance of having been able to celebrate the event, led by Isabel Guerrero, and the next services in honour of the Virgin: “The important thing is that all citizens can enjoy this start of the festivities that are different to the usual ones”. “I believe that within the precautionary measures that we are going to have in place, we will be able to enjoy these activities”, added Martín. On the other hand, the councillor for the PP, Carmen Márquez, said: “I want to thank all the people who do so much to ensure that the patron and all that surrounds us is beautiful and perfect and the protocols are complied with”.
