The Open University opens its second enrollment period until September 14th

  • The 'UP' aspires this year to become a centre associated with the Andalusian Flamenco School
  • The ‘UP’ will face the challenge of becoming an associate centre of the Andalusian Flamenco School.

Among the novelties for the 2021-2022 academic year, there is a new platform that will allow students to formalize their enrollment online

On Tuesday 17th, the second registration period for the courses offered by the Open University of Mijas opened. Those interested can register for the different workshops until September 14th. From the Department headed by councillor Hipólito Zapico (PSOE), they hope to achieve figures as good as those of the first enrollment period, in June, when more than 1,800 students were registered, enrolled in 75 courses, divided into a total of 270 groups. The councillor explained: “we had to extend these periods in anticipation that there would be more space so that there would not be crowds at the time of registration. We continue to keep the groups small, waiting for the educational and health authorities to announce in September that the situation is normalizing”.

What's new?

Looking ahead to the 2021-2022 academic year, the UP starts with various novelties. One of them is the launch of a musical initiation workshop for children under five years of age, as well as the extension of the hours of creative writing, language and dance workshops both in Mijas Pueblo and in La Cala.

In addition, in the coming months, the 'Popular' University will join the bandwagon of virtual classes, starting with Tai Chi, although with the expectation that this modality will be extended to more activities, such as languages. "I think it would give very good results and would allow people who, due to work issues, cannot continue attending to do so", said Zapico. Likewise, during the coming academic year, the 'UP' will face the challenge of becoming an associate centre of the Andalusian School of Flamenco, which would allow its students to obtain an official degree in flamenco dance.

Another important novelty is the launch of the new platform up.mijas.es, which will be fully operational as of next Friday and will allow students to formalize their enrollment online from home, via mobile or the computer, "allowing users to carry out the procedures online, meaning a leap in quality in the times that we are living", added the councillor.

However, enrollment may also continue to be done in person at the 'Casa de la Cultura' in Las Lagunas, in the classes on Calle Muralla in Mijas Village and at the Cultural Centre in La Cala.
