On July 15th, an outdoor exhibition was inaugurated at La Muralla in Mijas Village that pays tribute to the so-called silent generation of Spain, the one that was born between the 30s and 40s, and that was educated in the culture of hard work and sacrifice. In addition to this exhibition, a sculpture was also unveiled with the same purpose: to recognize the role played by the elderly population. The event was attended by members of the municipal corporation and the opposition, as well as representatives of Civil Protection, the Red Cross, groups and residents.

In his speech, the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), stressed that “this generation has endured many difficulties, especially during the post-war years, which were tremendously hard. However, they managed to raise their families”.

For his part, the deputy mayor, José Carlos Martín (Cs) encouraged residents and visitors “to visit La Muralla and contemplate this exhibition which, through different testimonies and images, reflects precisely everything that the elders of that generation have given us”.

“They deserve all our respect, especially now, because they have strictly complied with all the measures and have once again taught others a lesson”, said the councillor of the PP in Mijas, Carmen Márquez.

“It is a tribute to our grandparents  from Mijas so that their steps continue to leave a mark because they will always be in our memory”,  said the  councillor for Culture, Verónica Ensberg (PSOE).

“I always paint women and this design in particular was somewhat special. Therefore, I chose the colour black, because it was the colour that many of these women really wore at that time”, explained the artist Michèle Lehmann, who also thanked the blacksmiths Salvador Madueño and Paco García for their work, as they are the ones who gave shape to the design she had created for this tribute.
