The beaches of Mijas now have the 17 distinctions that attest to their quality and excellence in this complex year. Specifically, there are three blue flags, nine Q for Quality flags, an ISO 14001 flag, the ‘Safe Tourism Certified’ seal and the ‘Andalucía Segura’ seal, the only Blue Trail in the province of Malaga granted to the Coastal Path as it passes through the municipality and the Blue Centre awarded to el Torreón. In this way, the joint work by public administrations and the business fabric and, even by the citizens themselves, is recognized when working with the aim to increase and take care of the quality of the 14 kilometres of the coast of La Cala. It was on Thursday, July 15th, from the air, through drones, with the capacity control of its beaches and the mechanical lifeguard service, when Mijas presented all these awards. The event was attended by the mayor, Josele González (PSOE); the councillor for Beaches, José Carlos Martín (Cs); the delegate for Tourism in Malaga of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Nuria Rodríguez; and business persons led by the local delegate of the Beach Business Association, Carlos Morales. All of them valued these recognitions that place Mijas, they affirm, at the head of the tourist destinations offering sun and beach. In this regard, the mayor remarked that the harvest of these awards shows “the effort made in the last two years as a result of the pandemic to continue to position Mijas as a benchmark for safe and accessible coasts thanks to the implementation of innovative systems providing capacity control or the reinforcement of the rescue and first aid device, which is one of the largest in all of Andalusia, prioritizing the quality and excellence of the destination at all times”. For his part, the Beaches councillor stressed, after the presentation ceremony that, “apart from the quality of our waters, our environment, ecosystem, fauna, flora, cleanliness, security, accessibility and services that enable us to be granted these distinctions, in Mijas we have made special efforts to monitor measures against COVID”, because, according to Martín, “the Mijas coast continues to be looked over with drones in 2021, it has ten controllers so that safety distances are respected, with professionals cleaning and disinfecting the public toilets after each use and with sanitizing gels along the coast”. Joint effort Martín also highlighted the “multidisciplinary work carried out between various councils so that the idea of ‘a safe destination’, which is what we have fought for, reaches the tourists”. In short, “what we want to convey to visitors is that whoever comes to Mijas, will arrive knowing that we offer all the guarantees”, he said.
A task that the Tourism delegate praised, saying that she was “satisfied” with the management that is being carried out in Mijas regarding its coastline and pointed out the importance of institutional collaboration to maintain these distinctions, “which also contribute to reinforcing and improving our brand as a first class destination, capable of arousing interest within and outside our borders”. Finally, she recalled that aid is available, endowed with 5.7 million, for environmental recovery and sustainable use of the coastline.

Business support On behalf of the beach entrepreneurs, Morales reflected his “satisfaction”. “We are very happy because these distinctions show what we already know: that Mijas has some of the best beaches in the entire community”, he said.
Finally, the Environmental Technician of the Local Council, Juan Luis Vega, emphasized the requirements to obtain these distinctions. “Environmental information and education criteria, water quality, environmental management, safety and services are taken into account, something we work on year after year with increasingly evident results as demonstrated today”, he said.
