From the Department for Mobility and Transport of the Mijas Town Hall it has been announced this week that improvements are being made to the bus shelters and other elements. The councillor responsible for the area, Nicolás Cruz (PSOE), explained that the work is being carried out through the concessionary company of the service, GMG Mobiliario Urbano, which, in a first phase is “renovating and improving the entire line of canopies that cover the bus stops on the axis of the Mijas-Fuengirola highway”.
In total, 14 canopies will be changed in this first phase: “The new format has important new features compared to the previous ones, not only in terms of aesthetics and new design, but also incorporating glass panels that will protect users from both the cold and the weather", said the councillor to add that they are adapted for people with reduced mobility. In addition to this renovation of the canopies, other elements of urban furniture such as waste bins will be installed at these points. The general director of the GMG Mobiliario Urbano group, Rafael Llopis, pointed out in this regard that the new canopies have “more current designs” and safety glass panes “that are separated in case of breakage”. In this regard, he added that the company has 24-hour services to carry out any replacement that is needed.
Next phases
The first phase, which started two weeks ago and will conclude in mid-July, will focus on the Mijas Pueblo road up to the ring road and, later, at the end of July, it will take place in the village, as explained by Llopis. This first phase will continue with others to complete the map of bus shelters in the municipality. "Later we will move on to the urban area of Las Lagunas and, in a final phase, we will address the remodeling of these elements in the coastal area, both in La Cala and in the adjacent urbanisations", added the councillor.
The contract was signed seven years ago and has been resumed for only a few months. As Cruz explained, "it was suspended by a previous municipal government in 2014 for alleged breaches by the company and, after that, there was an administrative dispute". The councillor added that the court has agreed with the company, meaning that the activity has been resumed. "In addition, we appreciate this because we are fully satisfied with the commitment and work that the company is developing", added Cruz, considering that the action is being carried out with "tremendous speed and efficiency" in a municipality with almost 150 square kilometres and "a multitude of lines that operate both at an urban and interurban level". In total, Llopis summarized, between 50 and 60 canopies will be changed throughout Mijas.
Other actions
Llopis announced that his company will invest more than three million euros in Mijas, since not only will the bus and taxi shelters be renewed and other elements of urban furniture will be installed, but Mijas will also be promoted on advertising panels in the municipality "and along the more than 650 kilometres of coastline” that the company covers. The director of the company, who explained that they have 15 years to develop the contract, also pointed out that the taxi ranks will include new features. "On the part of the technical services of the local council, new measures are being studied so that both users and taxi drivers are happy", Llopis advanced.
