The streets and squares of Mijas are dressed in poetry

  • A triptych locating the verses and a brochure with the poems is published
  • Esta propuesta cultural ha comenzado en Mijas Pueblo pero podría extenderse a otros puntos del municipio.

The objective of the area is to promote culture in the municipality, and if citizens respond positively to this idea, it will be taken to all corners of Mijas

Since Thursday 3rd, the streets of Mijas Pueblo are full of culture. 22 verses by 22 classic and Malaga born poets are now written on the walls of different streets and squares of the village. The initiative was started by the Department for Culture. These verses “are located in different corners, squares and areas of the town”, said the councillor for the area, Verónica Ensberg (PSOE), who added: “for all those who want to participate in this cultural activity, it will be like a kind of gymkhana where they will be able to approach the Folk Museum in Mijas Pueblo and pick up a triptych where they will be able to know the location of these verses”. In addition, they will also be able to collect a collection of poems with the complete poetry of the verses that adorn the streets. The objective of the area is to promote culture in the municipality, and if citizens respond positively to this idea, it will be taken to all corners of Mijas. “It is an innovative initiative”, indicated the mayor, Josele González (PSOE), “which at the same time brings culture closer to the people. What we seek is to continue adding attractions to our municipality, in this case through collections of poems”.

From the Local Council they also add that “we wanted to start in Mijas Pueblo precisely to see the feedback from neighbours and tourists, seeking that those who visit us have even more frames where they can be photographed in our municipality”, added the mayor. Lorca, Goytisolo or Rosalía de Castro are just some of the authors who accompany many other Malaga poets and who are already part of our city. The mayor of Mijas invited the citizens of the municipality  to “walk the streets of the village to find their verse, to share it through social networks and, at the same time, asks the neighbours to protect these small vinyls so that they continue to form part of our village”. With this initiative, “we want to promote and value writing and poetry reading and we will continue to support these safe cultural initiatives”, Ensberg said. Now, in addition to the white Andalusian streets, from the Council for Culture they want poetry to form part of the corners of our village.
