El Torreón restaurant in La Cala launched the 11th Rice Week on Monday 26th October, a gastronomic event that opened with a tribute to Belén Guerra, president of the Santa Teresa Parish Group. The restaurant wished to recognise her commitment and dedication to the traditions of La Cala.
With tears in her eyes, Belén accepted the award “with pride and humility; proud of the fellowship within the brotherhood today, proud of the board, and proud of all the members. I also want to thank the people of La Cala, and thank El Torreón restaurant for choosing me; every little part of this tribute goes to each and every resident of La Cala, and to every member of our brotherhood”.

Moving tribute
The honouree was in great company at the lunch, surrounded by family and friends, including her parents, her sister, her husband and two of her three children. Also in attendance were the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP); the parish priest of La Cala, Fernando Luque; and members of the parish group’s board. The councillor from the government team, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), highlighted Belén’s dedication: “She is deeply involved with the church and the Santa Teresa brotherhood, and is one of our key community figures, always working, helping, and lending a hand whenever it is needed most”.
Deeply moved, Belén received a plaque in her honour and the ‘elder sister' medal from the board members: “It was a gift I wasn’t expecting because, until now, the elder sister medal did not exist; it is another step forward for us. I will wear it with pride, with special thanks to the founders of this brotherhood who worked to keep it alive until we took over, and we will keep working to move it forward”, Belén confessed.

The president of the parish group was also joined by several Mijas PSOE councillors. Socialist councillor Josele González (PSOE) wanted to “thank people like Belén and her board, who work voluntarily to keep these traditions alive so that newcomers to La Cala can discover them, and so that those who unfortunately cannot live here today have a reason to return and spend time with family and friends, so congratulations to them”.
11th Rice Week
Rice Week is a gastronomic event organised by El Torreón restaurant, over the past eleven years, has become a cherished tradition in La Cala. This year, the event will run until Sunday 1st November. “All week”, explained Salvador Gallardo, co-owner of the restaurant, “we’ll be serving a different rice dish as part of a spectacular set menu at a fixed price of 35 euros, including dessert and wine”. During the opening, guests enjoyed a mixed salad, mixed fried fish, and a boneless seafood paella.
As well as being a unique gastronomic event in La Cala, this eleventh edition will once again showcase its charitable side, as part of Thursday's proceeds will go towards cancer research. “On Thursday 29th October, part of the proceeds from everyone who comes will be donated to cancer research. We are currently running a breast cancer campaign, and anything raised for research is a great help”, concluded Mari Carmen Gómez, president of the AECC in Mijas.
