Mijas urges extreme caution when using barbecues in El Esparragal park

The Fire Department stresses the importance of monitoring embers, ensuring they are completely extinguished, and following safety guidelines

The Mijas Town Hall Fire Department is calling on visitors using the barbecues in El Esparragal Park, which are now open for use, to act responsibly, exercise extreme caution, and enjoy the area without putting people or the environment at risk.

The councillor for the Fire Services, Francisco Jerez (Vox), pointed out that the arrival of autumn should not mean relaxing safety measures: “We want our residents to enjoy El Esparragal and have a great day with their family and friends, but always with caution. Even if it has rained, the risk does not disappear. A fire can change direction in seconds, and a single lapse in attention can have very serious consequences”.

The councillor placed particular emphasis on weather conditions, asking people to avoid using barbecues in strong winds. “If it is very windy, please refrain from lighting them. A gust can pick up embers and blow them into nearby vegetation. It is better to change your plans for the day than to take an unnecessary risk”, he warned.

Recommendations

Among its recommendations, the department stresses the importance of using only designated facilities, keeping flammable materials away from the fire, having water nearby, and never leaving embers unattended. Jerez also emphasised the need to watch children closely: “Caution starts the moment we light the barbecue and ends when we confirm everything is completely out. Children must be kept at a safe distance and supervised by an adult at all times”.

Before leaving the area, users must make sure embers are fully extinguished and cold; rather than throwing them on the ground or dumping them while still hot into litter bins or containers. Furthermore, visitors are asked to clean up their rubbish and respect all signage and instructions from municipal services.

“Enjoying our parks also means looking after them and thinking of those who will use them next. Prevention comes down to simple actions that we can all follow”, Jerez concluded, also reminding the public to call 112 immediately in the event of any fire outbreak or emergency.
