The section of the Coastal Path that was destroyed by the force of the storms in January and February in the El Capricho area has entered into service this Tuesday 24th, following the completion of reconstruction works, which lasted approximately three weeks.
Specifically, this was a linear section of around 40 metres that already had to be closed to the public from the moment the initial damage was detected in mid-January. In early February, the constant pounding of the sea tore the section from its fixings, and it was necessary to process an emergency contract, which was published on the State Procurement Portal on the 25th of February.
The works were awarded to the company VGC Global SL for a sum of 223,000 euros and, once completed, have resulted in the reinforcement of the foundations with wooden piles. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), visited the area on Tuesday accompanied by the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez (PP). “We are confirming that the path has now been reopened. Local residents and everyone passing through here can do so safely, fulfilling the objective of addressing a need caused by the weather, specifically, the various storms that have caused damage in our municipality”, stated the mayoress. For his part, the councillor explained that “we got to work from the very first moment because we cannot wait; we live off tourism and tourism is fundamental for us. Our residents were also demanding a swift solution since many locals come to walk the Coastal Path daily for health reasons, and the closed sections made it impassable”.

The works consisted of the complete dismantling of the wooden walkway on the affected section; the clearing of the ground; the driving of wooden piles to a depth of at least one metre below sea level; the protection of these piles with rock armour below the sand level; the assembly of the wooden structure, decking, handrail and bench; and the restoration of the existing rock armour wall and fencing.
On the other hand, sand replenishment work that began on the 10th of March, two weeks ago, is continuing. On this occasion, the machinery continues its tasks on El Capricho beach, alongside the reconstructed section of the Coastal Path.
