On the 8th of March, members of Soroptimist International Costa del Sol took part in the International Women's Day march in Málaga city. The demonstration was organised by 'Plataforma Violencia Cero' (Zero Violence Platform), a network of women's organisations from across the province working together to end gender-based violence.
The 8M march in Málaga was held under the slogan 'For women's rights, health and peace'. According to Soroptimist, "our participation reflects a commitment that extends throughout the year, defending women's rights and fighting against gender-based violence every day".

The president of Soroptimist International Costa del Sol, Daphne Theunissen, highlighted the importance of advocating for clear and precise language when addressing women's rights. "There are voices in society that try to convince us that words don't matter, or even that gender-based violence doesn't exist. This puts women in danger; naming the problem is essential in the fight for a fairer society. Spain has ratified the Istanbul Convention, demonstrating that when governments commit to protecting women from violence, they send a clear message: women's safety is not optional".
'Why It Matters' campaign
Soroptimist is an international NGO dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls. The group emphasises that "progress begins with awareness". The Costa del Sol group has joined the European campaign 'Why It Matters', highlighting "the importance of ensuring that women's voices are heard at the levels where decisions are made".
No to war
On this day, Soroptimist International Costa del Sol also sends a special message of solidarity to women living in war zones, whose rights, safety and future are threatened on a daily basis. The association expresses its support for the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement and all women who continue to fight for their fundamental human rights in any circumstance or countries. Likewise, the local group condemns the executions in Iran. "We stand with our sisters around the world and say no to war, yes to human rights, peace, international law and the right to self-determination", said Theunissen on behalf of the entire local group.
