The Mijas Town Hall has announced that it is taking “a very important step forward’ in terms of security in the municipality with the implementation of a “comprehensive video surveillance system”. This structure will be managed by the municipal coordination centre (CECOM) of the Local Police and will serve to improve public safety, prevent crime and monitor traffic.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), presented the system on Thursday 15th, which has a budget of 2,182,703 euros plus VAT in the 2026 budget. Among other things, it includes the installation of more than 150 cameras throughout the municipal area, mainly in the three population centres (the village, La Cala and Las Lagunas) and in the main residential areas.
This project has been technically designed by a specialist company in collaboration with the Local Police, ensuring it includes the features required by the force based on their training and experience. According to the Executive, it is “an infrastructure that will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with up-to-date technology designed for the future”.

Protection
The system will feature cameras distributed throughout the municipality. On the one hand, there will be cameras for public safety installed in squares, public spaces and high-traffic areas, which will be used for crime prevention and the protection of people, property and public assets.
On the other hand, there will be traffic control and number-plate recognition cameras. These will be located at access points, roundabouts and entrances and exits to the municipality, allowing vehicles to be identified, traffic to be monitored and police investigations to be supported.
“Coexistence, well-being, leisure and daily life in a city are only possible when there is both a sense and a reality of security. That is what we will provide to the almost 100,000 residents of Mijas, because Mijas is already a safe municipality, but it will be even safer thanks to this initiative by the government team”, said the mayoress Ana Mata.
Locations
All locations have been selected according to technical and police criteria, prioritising the most sensitive points in the municipality. In this regard, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson explained that officers at the CECOM “will be able to view images in real time, review recordings and coordinate resources on the ground more efficiently”.
According to the Executive, is based on high-resolution digital technology, with night vision and video analytics using artificial intelligence. Images are transmitted mainly via wireless networks, reducing civil works, costs, and disruption on public roads.

The installation of these systems has already been put out to tender on the State Procurement Portal and interested companies can submit their bids until the 2nd of February. “Mijas is a large town, but spread over three population centres, and this has many advantages, but also disadvantages when it comes to security in general or road safety in particular”, said the mayoress Ana Mata.
