Mijas will invest 953,000 in a new cultural space in La Puente

  • El Ayuntamiento de Mijas ya tiene el proyecto que permitirá la creación de un nuevo espacio cultural.

The project envisages a building over the vault of this enclave, while preserving the characteristics of its surroundings

The Mijas Town Hall already has a project that will allow for the creation of a new cultural space in the historic site known as La Puente. This is an emblematic location in Mijas Pueblo, where the aim is to create a new attraction for visitors to this part of the municipality. The project has a base tender amount of 953,030.87 euros and a completion period of eight months.

The project sets out the work required to construct a new building between Fuente del Algarrobo, Coín and Cantera streets, with the objective of maintaining and preserving the vaulted structure known as La Puente, which was restored in 2021.

The plot is rectangular and elongated, with a significant slope along the streets that border it. The project specifies that the building will be traditional Andalusian in style, with a gabled roof and white façade.

Historical value

It should be remembered that the most characteristic feature of the site is that currently only the vaulted passageway where the building stood remains. The government team intends to create a new building in the image and likeness of the one that stood there and was demolished in the 1980s. Graphic documentation is available for this purpose. In fact, La Puente has significant historical value, as it is an architectural element included in the General Catalogue of Historical Heritage of Andalusia. The aim is to make full use of the plot; on the one hand, to maintain the historical image of the village with façades on Calle La Cantera and Fuente del Algarrobo; on the other, to house a cultural space with a permanent exhibition hall that integrates the most relevant archaeological materials found, for example, in the Jardines de La Muralla and Cortijo Acebedo, along with an exhibition of photographs from the period.
