The Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients in Mijas (AFA Mijas) is celebrating: on Tuesday 23rd, the transfer of the building that housed the former Civil Guard barracks to this social organisation was formalised, allowing it to expand its facilities and services.
This was announced by the mayoress of the town, Ana Mata (PP), during the signing of the administrative contract for the transfer of use of the building. In this way, a definitive step forward is taken following the agreement reached at the Local Government Board meeting in October, which approved the transfer of the building.

The agreement establishes that the facility will be transferred by the Town Hall for a period of 20 years. Although the façade is complete, the interior of the building remains unfinished, so AFA Mijas will have to carry out the necessary work to make it fully operational. In addition, it has also been agreed to transfer the association’s current facilities for another 20 years, meaning that two properties are now under the transfer.
The former Civil Guard barracks is a facility dating back to 1935, although it was restored in 1957 and refurbished in 2015. It stands on a plot of 1,128 square metres, with the building itself covering 534 square metres.
“A dream has come true”
“It is only fair for Mijas to have social and healthcare infrastructure that matches the needs of the municipality and the requirements of people with memory loss and their families. AFA Mijas is a benchmark centre and, for that reason, we will always collaborate”, said the mayoress, adding that “we are granting a 20-year lease on facilities, as was also decided in the 2018 participatory budgets, something that was launched here in Mijas and never fulfilled. Therefore, I insist, it is only fair that this transfer be signed today”.
“This is an incredible Christmas present. After almost 11 years of waiting for this building, following its approval in the 2018 participatory budgets and a motion in the Town Hall in which all political groups voted in favour of granting us the building in 2020, it felt like a nightmare as it never materialised, but today a dream has come true. We would like to thank the mayoress because she has always been committed to this project and has never given up on it”, explained the president of AFA Mijas María Rosario Cabello.

Regarding the work now ahead for AFA Mijas to refurbish the property, María Rosario Cabello called for “help from all citizens because it is for the common good. Our goal is to support those in need, those facing this situation, and families with a member suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s”. Ana Mata, for her part, said that “today we are celebrating that this transfer is finally a reality and we will work with the association and these families to provide the resources they need to continue running their workshops. In addition, we will work to ensure the renovation is completed soon giving us a building that meets the needs of Mijas and, above all, the people and families who depend on it”.
