Call for tenders for the drafting of the El Burrito de Mijas recreational park project

  • The Mijas Town Hall is promoting these facilities to encourage awareness and preservation of this species
  • Las dimensiones de los establos tendrán una superficie útil que permitirá a los burros acceder, girarse, moverse y tumbarse sin dificultad.

The new park will be located on the southern road and will feature stables, trails, recreational areas and an interpretation centre

The donkey is undoubtedly one of the hallmarks of Mijas, and the Town Hall has set out, it says, "to ensure its preservation". To this end, it has just launched a public tender for the drafting of the El Burrito de Mijas (Mijas Donkey) recreational park for a total of 44,202 euros, with the deadline for submitting bids set for the 26th of December.

The idea, as announced by the mayoress of the town, Ana Mata (PP), is to create a recreational park on the site where the stables on the southern road are currently located, where, in addition to learning more about this symbol of Mijas, the animals will have more spacious stables and recreation areas.

All this will take place on a plot of land that will be fully integrated into the landscape. The aim is to encourage interaction with the donkeys in semi-freedom, where they can roam and be visited, according to the councillor for Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés (PP).

  • Las dimensiones de los establos tendrán una superficie útil que permitirá a los burros acceder, girarse, moverse y tumbarse sin dificultad.

The objectives of this initiative are to raise overall awareness of animal rights and welfare, create an observatory for donkeys in semi-freedom from the Camino de las Canteras, allow visitors to walk with the donkeys (without riding them) along shaded and wooded trails, involve Andalusian donkeys in forest management and preserve the species.

Donkeys will also be able to “retire” in the park, and adult animals will be taken in for recovery and subsequent relocation. There will also be a Mijas Donkey Interpretation Centre. All this will be complemented by a network of trails and recreation areas where the public can interact with the donkeys.

Features

The plot where the facility will be located has an area of 26,000 square metres. The plan is to build three large modules for the donkeys, another for veterinary use, and a final one to be used as a storage facility.

The dimensions of the stables will provide a usable area that will allow the donkeys to access, turn around, move and lie down without difficulty inside them. In total, there will be twenty-four compartments with a capacity for two donkeys in each, giving a total capacity of 48 donkeys.

Each compartment must have a drinking water point and a light point, as well as rings on the walls to allow the animals to be tethered, thus ensuring maintenance and cleaning tasks can be carried out. The stables may be located at the lower or upper parts of the trails, taking advantage of the natural shape of the terrain, with semi-underground spaces integrated into the landscape and covered with vegetation.
