The widening of the A-387 received the green light from the Ministry of Transport for project development; the plan has been drafted and is awaiting approval

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), has presented the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility in Madrid with a series of essential measures to improve traffic flow both within the municipal area and on the access roads to the A-7 motorway. These initiatives include road widening, bypassing population centres to access the motorway and basic connections designed to alleviate daily congestion in the metropolitan area.

At the meeting, held with the deputy director general of Planning and Operations of the Directorate General of Roads, Rosalía Bravo Antón, the mayoress was accompanied by the head of Infrastructure of the Town Hall, Fernando Jiménez. The most advanced of the projects is the widening of the A-387 (Mijas-Fuengirola road), which received the relevant approval at this meeting. The project for this work has been drafted and, with this authorisation, is now entering its final contracting phase.

  • La carretera A-387 se convertirá en un gran bulevar.

This work will convert the road into a boulevard with two lanes in each direction, separated by a central reservation, on the section between the Camino de Campanales roundabout and the AP-7 motorway junction. Currently, it is a single-lane road with no separation, which slows traffic and can lead to a higher accident rate.

Connection between residential areas

Another project discussed at the meeting is the connection between the Mirador de la Sierrezuela and Manzanilla residential areas via an underpass beneath the AP-7 motorway. This project, which is essential for improving mobility between the two urban areas, must receive first authorisation from the Public Water Authority (DPH) of the Junta de Andalucía, after which the Directorate-General for Roads will process its approval. It will prevent the continuous use of the Camino de Coín and shorten journey times.

In addition, Mata stressed the importance of the Ministry of Transport approving the demolition of the Las Lagunas pedestrian bridge over the A-7, near the church of San Manuel González, and its replacement with a bridge for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This action will connect the urban areas to the north and south of this route.

Feasibility study

Furthermore, the Mijas Town Hall will shortly award the ‘Feasibility study for improving the permeability of the A-7 motorway in the urban agglomeration of Mijas Costa’, which will consist of a series of measures aimed at ensuring that access to this road does not necessarily have to pass through urban centres, as is currently the case, offering alternatives that avoid long delays.

In this regard, the councillor explained that one of the projects included in this study is the construction of an acceleration lane to join the A-7 from the La Cala roundabout towards Malaga.

Solid line

Similarly, the Town Hall considers it essential to remove the solid line that currently prevents vehicles leaving the La Butibamba area from accessing the A-7 directly, forcing all traffic to enter the town centre and causing constant congestion. Mijas is requesting that a broken line be installed to allow traffic to bypass the town and join the motorway, as is the case in the area around the Fuengirola Castle.
