For these associations, raising awareness of the disease and the services they provide is essential

On the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day, which was observed on the 21st of September, the Alzheimer's associations in the municipality chose Friday 19th to set up information and fundraising tables to raise awareness of their services and their needs.

From early in the morning, AFA Mijas set up several information tables, two in Mijas Pueblo, one in La Cala and another on Calle San Valentín in Las Lagunas to provide information about their centre in Mijas Pueblo and the various resources and activities they offer.

The director of the centre, María del Carmen López, said that "this year we wanted to dedicate the whole month to carrying out activities to raise awareness and spread the word about Alzheimer's. We want people to know about us, our resources and where to turn if they need help".

With the support of a psychologist, the association also conducted on-site tests for the early detection of the disease or any mental or cognitive problems. Professionals continue to call for awareness and help.

Luis de los Ríos, a psychologist at AFA Mijas and reminded people that "we should not be alarmed when the first symptoms appear. There are resources for Alzheimer's, as well as professionals and associations to turn to. Families are not alone, this is a process in which they can be supported. Of course, they must learn the tools to manage the whole process and face the challenges that will arise".

Everyone involved in the issue expresses the same view: more resources, more support and more care are needed for those who suffer from this devastating disease that has such a profound impact on family life.

Yolanda Peinado, a social and healthcare professional, said, "I know first-hand how hard this disease is because I work with people who suffer from it. It is extremely challenging for families. We need centres for families, so that they can help patients and relatives. I know the problem first-hand and any support is welcome".

For this reason, AFA Mijas wanted to dedicate the entire month of October to raising awareness about Alzheimer's, rather than just observing one day. Its director also announced that the services offered in Las Lagunas will soon be expanded.

The AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa association also chose Friday 19th to take to the streets with collection and information tables. The group emphasises the need to continue funding their day centre so that they can maintain all the services offered to patients. They also took the opportunity to raise awareness about the disease. This year, AFA Fuengirola-Mijas Costa set up six tables between Fuengirola and Mijas. They are calling for volunteers and support to continue raising awareness of the disease. Manuel Aragonés, a members of the group's board of directors, recalled that "we are in great need of funds. That is why we are here with the various tables to ask for help from the neighbours. We need to raise money to continue caring for everyone at our centre".

Their biggest challenge remains financing the centre, including its expansion, as they report having "a long waiting list for access".

Families are also playing a leading role these days. They help with volunteer work and are very involved with the association. They are very grateful for the support they receive from the association and for their place in the day centre.

Juan Pedro Garrido recounted his experience as a family member. "I couldn't take proper care of my mother even if I wanted to. We need the help of professionals and the day centre. No amount of money in the world can replace the care and benefits they provide, with so much love and affection". That is why he encourages all residents, and especially family members, to collaborate with these groups that do so much to help patients and their families.
