In dangerous situations, heroism emerges. This was the case last Saturday, 6th, at Peñón del Cura beach, where a human chain helped save the life of a child of approximately six years old and an adult, together with the three lifeguards who were in the area. The red flag was raised, prohibiting swimming, but five children entered the water against the lifeguards' instructions. "Four managed to get out on their own, but the fifth was unable to. That's when a bystander tried to help him. A man, approximately 55 years old, also got caught in the rip current. That's when the lifeguard team entered the water with two lifeguards on land trying to pull him out", said the coordinator of the Mijas Beach Rescue and Lifeguard Service, Gonzalo Botta.
It was then that the lifeguard who remained on the shore came up with the idea of forming a human chain to assist with the rescue. Numerous bathers quickly joined in. "There is a rip current, commonly known as a undertow, and the only way out was swimming against. The current was quite strong and he couldn't do it", added the coordinator.

Ambulance service
Socorrismo Málaga, the company providing the service, activated its ambulance service, as the adult was showing signs of exhaustion, although his vital signs were ultimately fine, while the child, who was provided with a flotation device, did not require attention. They also expressed their gratitude to the bathers: "We are very happy. We always receive a very positive response and cooperation from beachgoers, both on land and in the water, there are always people willing to help and show solidarity", added Botta.
However, the lifeguards warn that it is essential for bathers to follow their instructions: "If you go to a beach you don't know, ask the lifeguard team there, as they are the ones who will advise you. If there is a yellow flag, they should ask them where the safest area for swimming is, or if there is a red flag, follow the instructions and precautions given by the lifeguards", explained the coordinator of Socorrismo Málaga.
