The population in Mijas continues to grow year after year, nevertheless, the birth rate in the municipality is falling, in fact, in 2024 only 625 births were registered in the town. A figure that has caught the attention of the Department of Family and Equal Opportunities, for which the mayoress Ana Mata (PP) is responsible. "Bringing a baby into the world involves many expenses and it is normal that families think about it when taking this step, so from the Mijas Town Hall we have seen necessary to promote a new line of subsidies to encourage births", explained the Mata.
For the moment and for this purpose, the local government has already set aside in the 2025 budget an item of 100,000 euros to offer this financial aid in a near future. "We are considering an allowance of 300 euros per birth, although we have not yet determined the amount. The same goes for the allocation of 100,000 euros because, depending on the needs we see, we will be able to modify and increase that figure if necessary", argued Mata.
The granting of this aid will require a municipal ordinance, which is already being worked on. The criteria for accessing this subsidy are also being studied, as well as the documentation required to apply for it.
