The clock struck 9 o'clock in the morning on Sunday 1st December when 333 senior citizens were waiting to board the six buses that would take them to the city of the conquest, Granada. Couples, neighbours, family and friends arrived accompanied by their suitcases and a lot of enthusiasm to enjoy this trip organised by the Mijas Town Hall in their honour, and which will last until Wednesday 4th of December.
Before the departure, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP) accompanied by the councillor for the Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP), and other councillors from the government team, such as Daniel Gómez Teruel, who will also be present during the trip, came to see them off at the water park and to wish them a good trip. "We have fulfilled our objective that the elderly of Mijas have their traditional trip as it is established every year. This year we have increased the number of travellers and we can only wish this last group a great time".
When everyone was ready, the buses set off. To fuel up for the rest of the day they made a short stop on the way and enjoyed a good breakfast.
Arrival in Granada
The first stop was the Luna de Granada hotel. A four-star establishment where they are staying. There they were warmly welcomed by the team that works to make sure everything goes smoothly (technicians from the Senior Citizens area, members of the travel agency, accompanying persons, and medical staff) and they were explained how the trip will take place.
At midday, they had lunch at the hotel and at 16:00 they set off for the city centre to get to know all the ins and outs of the city. The tour began with a visit to the Monastery of San Jerónimo (the first Christian monastery after the reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs) where, after immersing themselves in its history and getting to know the refectory and the capitol, they discovered its impressive church that mixes Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque styles.
Then, they went to the area of the cathedral and the alcaicería. There they saw all the details of Granada's ceramics up close. At the end of the route, they enjoyed the Christmas illumination next to the Town Hall.
Despite the intense day, our seniors did not lose their festive spirit and enjoyed pasodobles, salsa and pop music on a very lively night. With this trip, the third in Granada and the sixth of the year, the expeditions of 2024 come to an end.
