World Children’s Day is commemorated on the 20th of November, the date on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959. The day is dedicated to draw attention to the situation of children, a vulnerable group, and also to publicise their rights, as well as to raise awareness of the importance of working every day for their well-being and development.  

In Mijas, on this day with greater emphasis, the focus was placed on children, who were the protagonists of a children’s plenary session in which they acted as representatives of their schoolmates and proposed current issues. A total of 230 students of fifth grade from the schools San Sebastián (Mijas Pueblo), El Olmo (La Cala) and Los Campanales (Las Lagunas) took part. The session was coordinated by the councillors for Citizen Participation and Education, and by the schools , which represented the three urban centres. 

Abrahan Cano, from the Campanales school, stated that “we have proposed to take care of the neighbourhood, not to make noise at night and not to throw things on the ground”. For his part, Fabio Luque, de El Olmo, from El Olmo, addressed the water problem in the plenary session. Participants focused on the fact that “we should not waste water because there is not much, for example, we should not fill the bathtubs”.

As highlighted by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who chaired the plenary session, “the main objective is to promote citizen participation from childhood, promoting a forum that allows them to address issues that affect them directly, learning to debate and reflect, and providing them with tools so that they can make their contributions to the municipal government. In this way, children have a direct means of participation, not only to express their interests, but also to make proposals and set their priorities. At the same time, they learn the need to get in the well-being of their municipality, as well as social commitment”.
