The Mijas Town Hall, through the Local Police, Fire and Civil Protection departments, has appealed to the public to "act prudently and cooperate" in view of the heavy rain forecast for the next few days. All this, given the red warning issued for Wednesday 13th of November, which affects the whole of the Costa del Sol due to the arrival of a new cold front.
Thus, on Tuesday morning a coordination meeting chaired by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), was held, which was also attended by the first deputy mayor and councillor for Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas (Vox), the councillor for Fire and Civil Protection, Francisco Jerez (Vox), representatives of Fire, Local Police, Civil Protection, Civil Guard and heads of services of various municipal departments involved.
In this regard, the mayoress recalled that the Town Hall is carrying out all kinds of preventive measures on an ongoing basis, such as the cleaning and conditioning of stream beds, although it is also necessary for the population to be very vigilant and respect the recommendations made by official bodies, as well as to be on the lookout for any information that may be offered. The councillor for Local Police insisted on the same issue, pointing out that coordination between departments is total in the event of any type of incident. "Warnings must be taken very seriously to avoid unnecessary risks", he said.
Possible emergency situations
The meeting addressed the emergencies that could occur in Mijas in the event of heavy rainfall, "such as the overflowing of the river, so we have to pay special attention to the Alberquilla area and so on", said Francisco Manuel Mérida, Head of the Fire and Rescue Service of Mijas, who also added that "the rainwater itself can cause problems in Las Lagunas, in areas that usually have flooding problems".
SLikewise, the coordinator of the Mijas Civil Protection, David Gutiérrez, indicated that "we will also check places in La Cala, in the lower areas of Avenida Marenostrum or the streets that go from the boulevard towards the beach and all the area around Los Cordobeses, because they are low houses and prone to flooding".
Recommendations
The Mijas Local Police, for its part, has also launched a first information campaign with essential recommendations to prevent risk. First of all, said the Chief Intendant, Juan Manuel Rosas, is to stay informed, "citizens should pay attention to the alerts and weather reports because, as we have seen before, the cold fronts are very unpredictable and no one knows exactly where the water is going to fall harder".
In this regard, the councillor for Police also asked the public for common sense in the event of heavy rain, avoiding unnecessary journeys, "as well as avoiding parking in risk areas, especially near streams and areas of possible overflow, as it is also important to stay away from ledges, walls and trees".
Cuevas also considered it essential to check the state of the roads before setting off if journeys are essential, "and of course, in the event of any emergency, the 092 and 112 numbers are available for immediate assistance".
The Local Police, Fire and Civil Protection services are on alert and ready to respond to any incident that may occur throughout the municipality, "in fact we are going to have special units, in the three bodies, and personnel who will be on call, as we call it, to be available in case of any emergency", explained the Civil Protection coordinator.
A memorandum was also sent out on Tuesday to schools and industrial parks in the municipality with all these recommendations, in addition to the guidelines set out by official bodies through the municipal media and social networks.
