On Saturday 19th the neighbours gathered together to celebrate their verbena. After several years, this tradition has been resumed, but in a new location, the Los Olivos park. The Mijas Town Hall again collaborated with the Asociación Parroquial de Santa Teresa, which organised these events.
The neighbours attended the meeting and enjoyed the two performances scheduled for the evening, the first one by Dj The Flakin Brothers and the second one by Grupo Callejón.
The verbena also included the election of the children's king and queen, who were crowned by the kings of the La Cala 2024 Fair.
The pilgrimage
Sunday 20th was the day of the pilgrimage in honour of Santa Teresa and the neighbours from La Cala filled the streets to enjoy this day. The mass began in the parish church at 11 hours with the presence of the Mijas corporation, as well as the members of the parish association, faithful and neighbours from La Cala. During the mass, the choir Hermandad del Rocío from the San José parish in Fuengirola performed. The corporation wanted to be present at such an important celebration.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, highlighted "the beautiful mass, which preceded the procession in which the religious float was carried by women" and pointed out the beautiful Sunday that was being celebrated in La Cala.
The councillor for festivities, Silvia Marín, pointed out that "this beautiful pilgrimage is the end of the events in honour of Santa Teresa", and she also thanked the parish association "for their work and all the women who carried the float, for making it so beautiful".
After mass began the procession of the Saint through the streets of her town, carried on the shoulders of the women dressed in flamenco on this occasion. The float left the church and went up Calle Marbella to the Boulevard. Members of the Las Lagunas music group accompanied her with their music.
The PP councillor of the Mijas Town Hall, Daniel Gómez Teruel highlighted "the great participation of Caleños in this pilgrimage, so awaited every year by the neighbours and devotees of Santa Teresa". The Vox councillor, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, also highlighted the great participation, "especially from foreign neighbours and visitors".
This year several carts also accompanied the procession in pilgrimage. New this year was the one from the Youth Association of La Cala, and that of the Peña Caballista Mijeña, which attracted a large number of members.
The pilgrimage took Avenida El Limonar until it finally reached the area of Los Olivos where everything was ready to receive the pilgrims. The Saint took refuge in her chapel after the walk, where she was visited by many devotees.
The councillor of Por Mi Pueblo, Juan Carlos Maldonado, highlighted "the day of coexistence between all Mijeños" and thanked the work of all the people involved in this celebration.
The PSOE councillor Tamara Vera, also thanked and congratulated the Asociación Parroquial de Santa Teresa "for their work and commitment to our traditions".
The most festive part of the pilgrimage began with families and friends getting together to enjoy the event in style. The participants had sweet wine, paella and salad, and all together enjoyed the lively atmosphere in Los Olivos.
On Sunday afternoon, Los Olivos became the perfect stage for the group Alboreá, which was the grand finale of a week that was marked by the feast of Santa Teresa.
